Welcome to Snowdrop Class. We are one of two Year 4 classes at Hillmead School. Our teachers are Mrs Davies (Mon, Tues, Weds am) and Mrs Neal (Weds pm, Thurs, Fri). We are supported in class by Mrs Coleman and Mrs Lawson.
We have had a busy start to the school year but have all settled in well. We were excited to start learning French and are looking forward to sharing a French poem in our assembly. We have particularly enjoyed science, where we learnt how rocks are formed using grated chocolate!
Today we continued our work on Living Things and Their Habitats. We learnt about microhabitats and went on a look around the school grounds for examples of animals which live in different microhabitats. Then we came back to the classroom and discussed why we think they like that habitat.
This week we have been working on multiplication. We learnt how to group beads together on the beadstrings and what a multiple was. Then we moved on to learning how to solve multiplication problems using arrays. Finally, we also learnt how to create a bar model for a multiplication calculation. We have had a very busy week!
This week we have begun looking at instructions in English. We looked at the features of instructions and discussed why they were important. Then we proved we could follow instructions by doing some paper mache! We got very messy but are looking forward to creating our very own golden snitches.
Today we started our new topic which is called I'm Alive! To start off our topic we went pond dipping! We found newts, spiders, water snails, dragonfly larvae and pond skaters. We were also very excited to be joined by a duck! We had a great time and were very glad that the weather was so nice for us. A brilliant start to our topic!
Today we started the term off by revising our year one learning in Maths. We learnt about half, quarter and three quarter turns. We played a game with our partners to see if we could follow the instruction correctly. Our champions were Chloe, Holly & Alex L!
Today we had some visitors from BP come in to do some Science with us. The name of the session was 'Helping Hands'. During the session we got to try on lots of different types of gloves and do activities with our gloves on to see how easy it was. Some of them were very tricky! The session helped us to think about materials and their properties before we thought about a 'super glove' that would have to do everything.
Today we had the Jungle Bungle literacy show where we thought about lots of different books. When we got back to class, we pretended we were Max from Where the Wild Things Are. We designed our own islands that we would travel to and we are very proud of them!
This week we have continued looking at Harry Potter in our English lessons. We pretended we were Harry Potter and wrote some diary entries. These are some examples.
Today we did a science investigation. We were looking at the shape of materials and how easily this can be changed. We thought about whether certain materials were easy or difficult to change the shape of. Then we thought of ways we could change the shape. We came up with bending, squashing, twisting and stretching. We found out that soft materials are easier to change the shape of and hard materials are harder.
Today in Maths we have been looking at adding 2 digit numbers to one digit numbers. We refreshed our memories of the strategies we can use to do this - Think 10 and rebalancing. We started the lesson by sorting calculations according to what strategy we would use to solve them. Then we moved on to using these strategies to play a game where we had to get to a target number.
This week in English we are looking at poetry. We have especially been focussing on rhyming words and homophones. We wrote our own poems with rhyming words. We also had fun matching up the words of nursery rhymes and creating lists of alternative rhyming words. this really helped with our dictionary skills!
This week we have begun looking at capacity in Maths. We started off by thinking about scales and how we can estimate and compare capacity. We filled cups of water and added them to our containers until they were full. Each time we added a cup, we made a mark on our scale. We had lots of fun but the classroom got very soggy!
Yesterday we went out on a Science walk around the school. We were looking for materials and what they were used for. We then talked about why we thought the materials were used for certain things. We decided it would not be a good idea if the school was made out of glass!
This week we have been looking at coins and money in Maths. We have been using some of our addition and subtraction strategies to apply it to money.
This week has been very exciting in Snowdrop class. We started our new topic of Toys and were very surprised when a Magic Toymaker visited our classroom overnight! He left us a letter asking if we could design a magic potion. Then the next day we designed keys because he got locked out of his workshop. We are very excited to see what task he gives us next!
We are looking at instructions in English this week. We have started by playing Snakes and Ladders and writing our own instructions on how to play the game. We had a lot of fun!
This week we have been very busy writing our own fairy tale stories. We will be putting these in a book and hope you will come and see them soon.
This week Snowdrop and Foxglove class have been practising their singing and dancing for their Christmas production!
This week we have been looking at number bonds to 10 and using these to help us with our number bonds to 100. We have also been finding different ways to make 100 with three different multiples of 10. As part of this, we played a game where we had to use multiples of 10 to get the closest to 100. We really enjoyed it!
This week we were lucky enough to do some cooking! We made gingerbread men to prove that we could read and follow instructions. In our English lessons, we then sequenced the instructions and wrote our own.
This week we did a special PE lesson on Monday. We got to use lots of the different skills we have learnt, such as throwing, catching and skipping.
In Snowdrop Class this week, we have been learning to play basketball in PE and during our Science and PSHE lessons we have been discussing and learning about healthy eating.
This week we are looking at poetry in our English lessons. We have worked really hard writing a poem about what we saw on the way to school. Then we moved on to get creative, thinking about what we wouldn't see on the way to school.
Here is an example of our poems:
