'A Way with Words'
What is it?
A writing project with a difference!
Snap! Theatre and their highly trained actors are working with the school to deliver an exciting and engaging writing project involving singing, dancing, poetry and acting with the eventual outcome of all children improving their writing ability.
What do the children do?
Over the past term the children have explored stories from different cultures with a moral teaching, listened to the amazing story of The Wright Brothers, acted out parts of the Greek Myths Icarus and Daedalus and delved into the world of The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark.
Each session involves a theatre presentation of the chosen story for that week, class workshops for children in Years 3, 4 and 5 and the opportunity to work on related activities back in the classroom.
After each workshop day the children write, for an extended period of time, on the topic and genre studied. Sometimes this is a story from a different viewpoint, a piece of poetry, a newspaper report or a story written by them within that genre. The children also have the opportunity to be creative within the projects, making aeroplanes from balsa wood, pom-pom owls or clay figures. There is always time for related artwork and each session concludes with a showcase of the days work.
What are the intended outcomes?
The project aims for all children, through these exciting opportunities and high levels of engagement in the productions, workshops and activities to improve their writing ability. This could include children writing more than they would usually write, writing confidently in different genres, expressing themselves through different mediums such as art, design and technology acting.
The final act...
At the end of the project, the children will showcase the project through a final production to parents and invited guests. All of the work completed will be on display, using the children’s books, the class book produced and display boards to show off the exciting and excellent work produced.
