There is a new Buzz around Hillmead Primary school with a new bee colony being the newest members of the school community. The bees are looked after by the school's new 'Buzz club' as part of a drive to increase outdoor leaning at the school. Club members are responsible for all aspects of bee-keeping; from weekly inspections through to swarm control and honey extraction and bottling.
The bees were financed from a £12,000 Tesco grant, as part of the supermarket's Bags of Help initiative. The grant will also pay for a planned redevelopment of the school garden and pond and finally some school chickens will soon join the school community.
Michelle Shenston, Headteacher at Hillmead: “The children are buzzing with excitement that their school now has its own bee colony. Looking after animals such as bees and chickens gives the children not only a different learning experience about food and the environment, but also a sense of achievement and responsibility. And we all will be able to enjoy our own honey and eggs.'
