School Sports Organising Crew (SSOC)
This is our team of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils who have been chosen to become members of the School Sports Organising Crew (SSOC). The SSOC assist with the running of intra-school sporting events and playground activities. The SSOC also promote and support our annual School Games Day.
The SSOC demonstrate and promote these values: self belief, teamwork, determination, honesty, passion and respect.
The team meet on a regular basis to plan upcoming events. Please look at the school sports board in the main corridor for further details.
To find out more about the events we have taken part in and the achievements of our pupils both inside and outside of school, please read our sports newsletters.
On Tuesday 18th June we held our inaugural Sports Presentation Evening. This was a review of the year’s sporting achievements and a chance to celebrate the many successes of the teams and children at Hillmead. As part of the evening a large numbers pupils demonstrated their sporting talents in the form of dance and gymnastics routines, karate katas and football and rugby displays.
The children were presented with certificates for representing the school in sporting competitions this year. Over 100 children received certificates. But they were not the only ones, because Mrs Brock (Emily and Katie’s mum) also received a certificate for winning the speed bounce competition that evening.
As well as certificates, a number of other awards were presented.

On Monday 26th June we had a visit from our Athlete Mentor, Mike Mullen, who is a former BMX UK Halfpipe Pro Champion and former World Master Halfpipe Champion. He delivered a whole school assembly, which included a BMX display, and then a workshop with Year 5 focussing on coping with stress.
The children thoroughly enjoyed his visit and we are looking forward to Mike returning again for two mornings in the autumn term.
Firstly we’d like to thank everyone who came and supported the children at our School Games Day onThursday 22nd June and to the PTA for providing the refreshments.
The winners of the Key Stage1/EYFS competition were Elm (Yellow Team). This event would not have been possible without the help and support provided by the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils, including the Sports Organising Crew who helped to officiate and the House Captains who guided their teams so thoughtfully around the events.
Our Key Stage 2 competition in the afternoon was won by Ash (Red team).
On Friday 9th of June, Lauren Gore represented the East Herts Junior Schools Swimming Team at the County Junior Schools Gala.
Lauren was entered into the competition by the school but won her place based on the fast times she had achieved at other swimming galas.
Being selected for team was a great achievement and we are very proud to say we had a Hillmead pupil at this year’s gala.
On Thursday 8th June, 30 of our Year 5 and Year 6 children went to the Tag Rugby Festival at Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club. There were no winners or losers this year and this made for a really friendly atmosphere.
The Summer Term began with the Primary Schools Cross Country Event, organised by The Bishop’s Stortford High School. There were some tremendous performances from our Y5 team. Most notably Keira Picton who came 12th out of 76 girls and Louis Ryder who came 7th out of 106 boys.
On Thursday 2nd March Hillmead sent two teams to compete in the Hi-5 netball tournament. Both teams
played very well coming third in their leagues. Our A team missed out on winning their league by only one point. This is a great start to the season and we look forward to success in the Summer netball league.
On Friday 2nd December some of our Year 4 pupils took part in a Rapid Fire Cricket Competition at the HECCSport Centre for Cricket, near High Wych. Rapid Fire Cricket was a new addition to the inter-school competition calendar this year. Our team played superbly and narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot on runs scored.
Under 11 Basketball Competition, November 2016
Eighteen primary schools across the Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth area took part in this competition. Here is a report of the event by Maddie, Holly and Alana:
On 17th November 2016, we went to compete in a basketball competition at Birchwood High School (BSP) for Years 5 and 6. Holly, Maddie, Alana, Alice, Joe, Keaton, Matthew and Dylan played extremely well in the matches and got through to the Third and Fourth Play-Off. It was a fast-moving, aggressive game, and we came third out of 18 schools.
Tri Golf Competition for Year 4
A group of Year 4 children took part in a golf tournament at a local club. It was a wet and windy afternoon but they thoroughly enjoyed taking part and finished in 2nd place. Well done to our golfers!
